That's just what I knew I needed this weekend. Nick and I have stayed in town for a few Memorial Day weekends in Portland and I have to say, I've loved every one of them. Often the long weekend falls on May 30th, my birthday, so we follow our yearly tradition and take a romantic trip to the beach, any beach will do really, and we've lived and loved and visited our way up and down the Oregon Coast for the past nearly 7 years of marriage. Amazing memories but this birthday weekend we'll have just the same experience as Memorial. The crowds should be gone and I'm looking forward to the simple & extravagant feeling of having the whole beach to ourselves.
I'll step out into the waves and feel the air and duck the seagulls and look back at the one I love. What else is there in life.
But this weekend is all ours. It's a Stay-cation and something we've desperately needed. No doctor's appointments, no procedures or infusions or medical bills to read, only good books and good dogs and tomorrow some good friends.
Sneak peak, we're heading out to the construction site of our new home just outside of Portland! We're cutting costs and saving a bundle in equity in order to pay off some lasting medical bills and get ready for the birth of our baby (through surrogacy) hopefully around this time next year.
Ask and you shall receive. We begged and worked and meditated and spent a year with our heads bent to the kitchen table, desperately trying to find a solution to the financial strain of chronic illness and physical recovery as well as the job loss that comes with focusing on staying alive. The answer came in the firm of a new home, a fresh start, and what we hope will be a wonderful community for us to grow into and our family to grow up in. Wish us luck tomorrow!
And I'm sending you love and luck and fortune and joy this holiday weekend. I hope you do make time for yourself. I hope you shamelessly make time for what and whom you love. And most of all, I hope that you list yourself among those people you love and care for and about. So often we leave ourselves off that list. Put yourself first and enjoy whatever time off you can get, it's all precious.
Lots of Love,
