My mom isn't big on displays of affection but I could always feel her love for me and for all her family when she sang to me, especially this song.
When I had come out of surgery & was told that living through the night was unlikely, touch and go, I sent Nick out of the room. I couldn't bear for him to see what was to come. I couldn't leave him like that, with the memory of my death.
But my mom sat in the corner of my room, on an awful plastic cot all through the night. She stayed with me and although the room was silent, I could hear her singing those words to me all those years ago.
You are my sunshine,
my only sunshine,
you make me happy,
when skies are gray,
You'll never know Dear,
how much I love you.
Please don't take,
But I do know what I remembered. My mother, my family, their love.
Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, Auntie, Beth, Jack, all my family, you all came to me that night. You were all with me. You are my sunshine. I hope you feel my love today like a ray of sun, warm and present and true.
Lots of Love,
I hope it means as much to you as it did for me today.
